Men and Women play alongside each other at European Tour Event

Finally.

In May next year the Ladies European Tour’s Meryem Cup will be played alongside the Trophee Hassan II on the men’s tour at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco on the same course at the same time. The European Tour players will play on the red course and the Ladies European Tour players will play on the Blue Course.  I’ve long thought, and said so in a magazine in 1991 I think, that this was one of the best solutions to making womens golf more visible. This year the two events were played in the same city at the same time but on different courses. This is an historic decision which will help the LET gain increased television coverage, and will hopefully pave the way for more tournaments to be co-sanctioned in this way as has often been the case in championship tennis. The LET’s good, out of the box thinking, was shown again this year when their Turkish Airlines Ladies Open was played Monday to Wednesday at a time when the men’s tour was resting. Let’s hope this all goes smoothly in Morocco and leads to greater exposure and support for womens golf.
