Remembering Payne Stewart

Today would have been the birthday of Payne Stewart. It is hard to believe that this year, on October 25, it will be 20 years since he was lost in the plane crash. His legacy includes two fine children Chelsea and Aaron, who are both doing well now in their thirties, the Payne Stewart Award which last year was given to his friend Bernhard Langer, and is awarded to a player whose “values align with the character, charity and sportsmanship that Stewart showed”. This includes respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of charitable support and professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct. His legacy is also in remembering not only his three major championships, but the way he treated people. He always made them feel good about themselves, he was a special person.
