The first male professional to come out

F8809CAC-CF2B-4E67-AEF9-39CFC52DA990

A major story which was picked up on American natonal newspaper USA Today featured Hawaiian professional golfer Tadd Fujikawa.

Speaking on his Instagram account Fujikawa decided to come out as gay on World Suicide Prevention Day. He is the first male professional golfer to be openly gay, though there have been a number of top professional women golfers on the LPGA tour who are have been openly gay since the 1980s.

Tadd Fujikawa is the youngest player to ever compete in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2006 when he was 15. The next year he made the cut at the Sony Open, becoming the youngest player in 50 years to make the weekend at a PGA Tour event. He is now 27 and today he wrote:

“I don’t expect everyone to understand or accept me,” Fujikawa wrote. “But please be gracious enough to not push your beliefs on me or anyone in the LGBTQ community. My hope is this post will inspire each and every one of you to be more empathetic and loving towards one another.

“I’ve been back and forth for a while about opening up about my sexuality. I thought that I didn’t need to come out because it doesn’t matter if anyone knows. But I remember how much other’s stories have helped me in my darkest times to have hope. I spent way too long pretending, hiding, and hating who I was. I was always afraid of what others would think/say. I’ve struggled with my mental health for many years because of that and it put me in a really bad place. Now I’m standing up for myself and the rest of the LGBTQ community in hopes of being an inspiration and making a difference in someone’s life. Although it’s a lot more accepted in our society today, we still see children, teens, and adults being ridiculed and discriminated against for being the way we are. Some have even taken their lives because of it. As long as those things are still happening, I will continue to do my best to bring more awareness to this issue and to fight for equality. Whether the LGBTQ is what you support or not, we must liberate and encourage each other to be our best selves, whatever that may be. It’s the only way we can make this world a better place for future generations.

Last December won the Hawaii State Open after announcing he was experiencing depression and anxiety.

Fujikawa asserted that he doesn’t want this announcement to focus on him, and hope it helps spread love and acceptance to those in similar situations.

“I can’t wait for the day we all can live without feeling like we’re different and excluded,” Fujikawa said. “A time where we don’t have to come out, we can love the way we want to love and not be ashamed. We are all human and equal after all. So I dare you…spread love. Let’s do our part to make this world a better place.”

I once spoke to a top professional who said this  – “there are no “pink” players on the mens tours and there never will be”. There is now.

In December 2018 English LPGA Player Melissa Reid came out publicly saying that she had stayed in the closet because she was wortied about sponsors reactions. But then began to question why these companies would want to have me represent them “if I cant be my authentic self”. It is odd that the LPGA has quite a number of gay women professionals in its ranks. It began with the great Babe Zaharias . Some are openly gay and others like Meg Mallon just acknowledge the fact that “oh Ive been in a relationship with fellow professional Beth Daniel for 25 years” when she made a Hall of Fame induction speech. Good for both Tadd and Melissa for making things clear. Ive always thought that there are not two sexes there are four.

Jordan Spieth ready to accept fine

At the BMW Championship Jordan Spieth’s Tied 57th place slipped him to 31st spot in the FedEx Cup rankings so by one spot he misses out on playing in the Tour Championship.

He said “I was in control of my own destiny and didn’t have it this week. Riding some momentum but my game kind of got a little off”.

As explained in the post below Drama at the BMW Championship, Spieth fails to fulfil a PGA Tour Scheduling Requirement by only playing in 24 events.

He said “I obviously accept whatever fine it is and move on. I try and add one every year but it is kind of tough”.

This unusual situation is a warning for even the highest ranked golfers not to get complacent. It seems to me that the PGA tour are saying that the tour comes first – wheras the European tour have been more accommodating and flexible with their members underlining their “players first” philosophy.

Tony Finau is final wild card pick

3D8C2A7B-FDCF-44E7-8103-4F21BA24271A.jpeg

American Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk said “he checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to pick him”.

So unlike European Captain Thomas Bjorn who went for experience, Furyk has picked a player on blistering current form. Finau has finished top 10 in three of this year’s majors and finished 2nd, 4th and 8th in the FedEx Cup playoffs. The World No 17’s only win is the 2016 Puerto Rico Open.

Finau said “I got goosebumps when he told me. I’m excited and hopefully I’ll bring something to the team that can help us bring the cup back”.

A popular player amongst his fellow professionals Finau is of Tongan and Samoan heritage. The 28 year old mormon and his wife have four children.

Justin Rose becomes World No 1

8C0B73F5-5709-4891-8EFA-63AE3F5D2E0A

Rudyard Kipling wrote “If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same”.

Justin Rose had reason to contemplate this yesterday at the BMW Championship when an outrageous lip out meant he missed winning the tournament outright and then went on to lose a playoff, what he called a stinging defeat for the second week in a row. Then while feeling this misery, he had the elation of learning that the same time he reached the pinacle of his sport becoming World No 1. Emotion overload.

He was asked how he felt about this achievement while still smarting from losing the tournament. In a way the unfortunate timing of the precious moment happening took the edge off things until he seemed to oull  himself together and realise the enormity of what he had achieved.

“It’s boyhood dreams stuff. It’s something I’m incredibly proud of. These three things, winning the US Open, the Olympic Gold medal and becoming world number one define my career at this moment. It’s taken 20 years to get here”.

Today, when he had time to get over the acuteness of the loss and let it settle, he began to dwell on his achievement instead. In a tribute to his late father Ken he wrote on twitter

We did it Dad.

Drama at the BMW Championship

1211F50A-8562-4FA8-9094-2C9E59D8B32D

Jordan Spieth currently lies T39 in the FedEx Cup standings on Sunday and needs an exceptional final round to avert an embarassing situation. Only the top 30 players will progress to the Tour Championship at East Lake in two weeks time. If Spieth fails to get into the field he will break a tour rule which states that players must play 24 PGA Tour starts (he has played 22 and the Ryder Cup will count as another). If not the player must have played in an event he had not played in the previous four years, which he has not. If Spieth does not make the Tour Championship he will break that rule and face a fine and suspension. Having made $2.4 million this year he can afford the fine, but more embarassing is that he is currently Chairman of the PGA Tour advisory Council. Heavy rain is forecast for today, leading to a possible Monday finish.

The final member of the US Ryder Cup team will also be announced by US Captain Jim Furyk tomorrow.

The high cost of changing Wentworth Club

Since buying Wentworth Club in 2014 Dr Chanchai Ruayrungruang has not only brought about changes to the membership he has invested hugely in upgrading the West Course to a really superior level of Championship golf. The putting surfaces look to be the best they’ve ever been and the condition of the course and the overall presentation received wide praise from competitors during the BMW PGA Championship.

Having recently been into the clubhouse, it was quite a culture shock. Gone was the cosy warm feel, the familiarity and it was replaced by something else. Italian marble, chrome and glass and steel, the finest carpets from China. This was something else. A dazzling display of clubs and memorabilia glistening in glass cases under spotlights. It looked like a fancy shop in Bond Street that set out to impress but not to make you feel welcome. It was look but dont touch. Where had Wentworth gone? It looked cold. £20million had been spent on the total refurbishment of clubhouse and golf course.

It’s recently been reported that Wentworth Club have lost £13 million in the past financial year. Dr Ruayrungruang’s Reignwood Group now appears to have the club heavily in debt. A new loan of £37 million has been taken out from the Agricultural Bank of China and previous debts of £135 million to Reignwood Global Investment have had payments deferred. There’s also a business dispute going on within Reignwood. Another twist in the ongoing saga.

Golf obsessed in Iceland

17226DCD-2B94-4555-8B61-FF204C473E94.jpeg

Last October I was in Iceland which might be the most golf obsessed country on earth. There are more courses per people 65 to just over 300,000 inhabitants with 60,000 occasional golfers. This is because the season is so short mainly from May to September, but for two or three weeks around the 20th of June it’s possible to play 24 hours a day under the midnight sun.

There were other things to do, to see the Northern lights, the whales and the John Lennon tribute, so the golf season was mainly finished but an important club , Oddur GC near Reykjavik was still open. It was interesting to seemthe lava round the greens, volcanic rock, the spectacular scenery near the Atlantic Ocean. It was unbelievably windy and challenging. A ferry across to Vestman Island to see Vestmannhayeir GC, which has hosted the National Matchplay Championship played over only 13 holes. I thought that this was a creative idea, not sticking to the 18 hole format. It also appealed to me as a female player, being short at only 5,400 metres long.

Interesting to see that the Icelandic team won the European Tour’s first Mixed Team European Championships last month. For a country with a female Prime Minister which does much to promote equality, they were suitable winners of what I hope is a new trend of integrating men and women in professional events.

It is amazing to know that golf is even played in Iceland’s neighbour, Greenland, at a place called Uummannaq. There are no greens, just snow and ice.
